Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is delighted to welcome national treasure Su Pollard to the stage in Harpy, a one-woman tour-de-force performance of a razor-sharp and bittersweet drama from Fringe First award winner Philip Meeks (Wed 18 Mar).
Birdie’s a hoarder. The neighbours call her a harridan and a harpy, although most have never even met her. They see her hoard as a hazard for house prices. But it isn’t rubbish. It’s her life’s work and it exists because years ago something deeply cherished was stolen from her, and Birdie’s not been able to give up anything since. She’ll do anything to get this priceless thing back. Anything at all.
Harpy made its debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2018 with Su Pollard playing the part to critical acclaim. Su is perhaps best known for her role as Peggy in the BAFTA Award-winning sitcom Hi-de-Hi! Which ran for 8 years on primetime BBC. Other TV appearances include The Royal Variety Show, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Take the Plunge (as host), and Strictly Come Dancing’s Christmas Show. She has also performed in numerous shows in London’s West End including: Godspell, Me and My Girl and Don’t Dress for Dinner.
Philip Meeks is a playwright whose work includes Murder, Margaret and Me, which premiered in 2012 and has toured the UK ever since; Edith in the Dark, which embarked on a national tour in autumn 2018; and Kiss Me Honey Honey! which was a Fringe First winner in 2013. His work in television includes several years’ writing Emmerdale and he has also written for BBC Radio 4 legal series Brief Lives and regularly contributes to the Big Finish audio dramas based on the cult sixties series Dark Shadows.
Harpy is at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds for one night only, Wednesday 18 March at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale via the Box Office, call 01284 769505, book online at www.theatreroyal.org/harpy or visit the theatre in person.
