Tears for Fears at Newmarket

As the backing track of Lorde’s version of Everybody wants to Rule the World faded and the lights went up, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, aka Tears for Fears, took to the stage for the first time in 11 years on British turf; to yet another sell-out crowd at Newmarket Nights.

Opening with probably their greatest anthem and hit, Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Songs from the Big Chair), from the get-go Curt and Roland were clearly enjoying every minute of playing to a home crowd. Next came Secret World (Everybody Loves a Happy Ending) followed by Sowing the Seeds of Love (The Seeds of Love) and so the tone and standard for the evening was set, and set high!

If anything Tears for Fears sound better than ever! The constant switching between vocal lead and harmonies between the two chaps was tight and effortless; Roland certainly has no problem whatsoever hitting the high falsetto notes and holding them. Top this with Curt’s bass solo and you forget after all these years just how good these two are as musicians. The night was only enhanced further by the presence of female backing vocalist Carina Round, her vocal performance during Badman’s Song was outstanding.  Backed up by a tight combo of keyboards, drums, and lead guitar, the only question that begs to be asked is, why have they not toured the UK in recent years?

The music crowd, predominately made up from children of the 80’s, with probably a little less hair and hairspray than back in the day, together with the race-goers gave their all, singing along to such timeless classics as; Pale Shelter, Break It Down Again, Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, Change, Mad World, Memories Fade, Closest Thing to Heaven, Advice for the Young at Heart and a somewhat softer cover than the original of Radiohead’s “Creep”. But the crowd really amped up their own performance when it came to Head Over Heels, much to the delight of the band!

Romping home to the finish with an encore of Woman in Chains and Shout, Tears for Fear are a thoroughbred act who need to come back soon and tour for all their UK fans…
