Texas

She may have rocked up to the venue in her slippers and infected by the lurgy (shared by her fourteen-year-old offspring), but when Sharleen Spiteri took to the stage at Newmarket it was all about the performance.

Unusually for a Newmarket gig it rained, but the rain did not deter true Texas fans. What’s a bit of water between friends?  Without announcement or fanfare, the band took to the stage and went straight into the classic ‘I Don’t Want a Lover’.  Whatever the Newmarket doctor gave Sharleen to kill the lurgy worked. She was in fine voice and the band as tight as ever.  But you would expect that of band that has been together, with little change of line up in over thirty years.

The set covered the whole range of Texas numbers from the late eighties up to and including tracks from ‘Jump on Board’, the album released in April of this year. All the fans favourites were there, ‘Let’s Work it Out’, ‘Summer Son’, and the thumping ‘Tell That Girl’, an absolute stonker when heard live, as is ‘Black Eyed Boy’.

The band were relaxed and obviously enjoying themselves. Spiteri comes across on stage as a very open and honest person, her thank you to the crowd one of the most genuine I have heard in many years.  Thankfully there were few if any fascinators on show in the crowd, possibly as a result of the weather – apparently these freak Sharleen out. And thinking about it… I can see where she is coming from.
