The BBC Big Band

The BBC Big Band, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading and most versatile orchestras, will once again be appearing in concert at the Royal Hospital School this Saturday.

The band is hailed as one of the leading performers of the music of the great swing bands, and on Saturday 25th February they themselves will be in full swing as they put on an evening of music inspired by some of the legends of the genre; Frank Sinatra, Booby Darin and Matt Monro.

This is a repeat visit to Holbrook from the group who were once hailed ‘A wonderful band’ by the great Tony Bennett, and following a performance in front of a packed RHS house last year, the ensemble were keen to venture East once more.

The band’s agent, Jonathan Boddy, said:

“The band were bowled over by the enthusiasm of last year’s audience, and particularly by the pupils of the Royal Hospital School, who obviously relished the opportunity to see the guys in action.”

This year’s concert will also feature one of the finest big band singers in the UK, Matthew Ford, a regular performer with the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra and Grammy-nominated John Wilson Orchestra.  In 2006 he was voted the ‘Best UK Male Big Band Vocalist’ and competed with Jamie Cullum for the overall title of ‘Best UK Male Vocalist’.

Under the direction of their long-standing conductor, Barry Forgie, the band has recently performed with stars such as George Benson, Van Morrison and Georgie Fame, and in the past has backed the likes of the late, great Ray Charles.
