The Bratislava Hot Serenaders

The Bratislava Hot Serenaders are sure to enchant audiences at their visit to The Apex on 18th July.

This authentic vintage orchestra from Slovakia play swing & dance music from the 1920s and 1930s. They stunned British audiences on their last visits here, earning standing ovations and comments such as:  “Brilliant” (Marlborough Jazz Festival), “Terrific performance” (Edinburgh Jazz Festival) and “Totally captivating” (Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival).

Hot jazz and dance music are combined with period dressing and genuine style. They are led by the acclaimed trumpeter Juraj Bartoš and feature brass, reeds, rhythm sections, four violins, the Serenaders Sisters Vocal Trio, and two male singers.

Their playing replicates the sound and feel of orchestras such as those led by Paul Whiteman, Jean Goldkette, and Duke Ellington, while also including Czech, Slovak, and other European classic jazz tunes of the period in their repertoire.

The band’s enthusiastic musicians were brought together in 1991 by their love of the “Hot Jazz” or “Sweet Dance Music” which arrived in Europe at the end of the Twenties. They spend their free time searching for old shellac gramophone records and reconstructing the old melodies and arrangements note-by-note. After hours of practicing, they dress in traditional costumes, put brilliantine on their hair and start playing their vintage instruments and singing into the lone microphone.

You’ll be bewitched by their brilliant recreations!
