The Doorstep Theatre Festival Comes To Bury

Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is following the demonstrably successful Once Upon A Festival with a new children’s arts programme The Doorstep Theatre Festival. Designed to make high quality arts activities accessible to primary schools by lessening the restraints of rural isolation and the financial implications that come with visiting an arts venue (Mon 17 – Wed 26 Jun).

The project provides schools with the opportunity to host a performance in their hall with the choice of two productions by one of the UK’s leading children’s theatre companies Half Moon Theatre. For key stage one, The Goose Who Flew – using charming storytelling, simple puppetry and an assortment of quirky characters, this is a heartfelt story of a goose setting off to fly south for the winter but finding things are not as they should be. For key stage two, Young Herbert’s Horrors – a pirate adventure with a twist! Living on a boat should be the ideal life for a wannabe pirate, but a storm brews up when Herbert is sent home from school and mum calls on Uncle Albatross (the scourge of all pirates) to warn him of the dangers of rebellion.

Following the performance, schools have the option to take part in enrichment workshops led by Theatre Royal’s team of highly skilled Drama Facilitators, or to visit the theatre for drama, technical, craft and storytelling workshops with other participating schools as part of the extended programme offer. Both offers come at a heavily subsidised rate to schools. Teachers taking part have also been invited to a CPD session at the theatre to explore how the themes within the performances and workshops can be carried into the classroom.

The festival’s producer, Education Officer Hayley Murrow said: ‘Young people are the lifeblood of Theatre Royal and it is important that we are reaching out to as many schools within the community as we can with high quality projects and arts activities, especially those situated in rurally isolated areas. We have some really exciting plans in place for the Primary Schools taking part in this year’s children’s arts festival that we hope will inspire young people and their families to keep exploring the arts.’

The Doorstep Theatre Festival is Supported by Suffolk Community Foundation, through the Miller Trust Fund, and the Arts & Culture Fund. It has also been supported using public funding by Arts Council England, and Suffolk County Council.

The festival runs from Mon 17 – Wed 26 Jun, teachers who are interested in booking a performance should contact education@theatreroyal.org or call 01284 829935.
