The Hot Club of Cowtown at The Apex

From the bright lights of Nashville’s Grand Ol’ Opry to the Glastonbury and Cambridge Festivals, The Hot Club of Cowtown has ascended from their unlikely beginnings in NYC’s East Village more than two decades ago, to become the premier ambassadors of Hot Jazz and Western Swing.

The joyful sound of this effervescent string trio blends traditional Western swing of the American southwest with European hot jazz influences of the same era.

There are glimpses into Romany music and culture, along with the musical sophistication and sizzle of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt’s Quintette du Hot Club de France.

The trio also write their own material and reinterpret everything from hoedowns to American songbook standards in their own original style: Elana James’s spring-fingered violin solos and Whit Smith’s liquid guitar lines are propelled by Jake Erwin’s driving percussive upright bass.

Romantic and rhythmic, happy and heart-breaking, sophisticated and elegant, while still down-to-earth and rugged, the Hot Club of Cowtown return to The Apex on Sunday 1 May
