Theatre Group Brings Flamenco, Sword Play, and Gipsy Kings Classics to Bury

Bury St Edmunds’ newest theatre group, The DN25 Company, is bringing the West End hit, Zorro: The Musical, to The Apex next month, following two years of it being postponed twice due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Inspired by the 2005 fictional biography Zorro by Isabel Allende, Zorro: The Musical follows the romantic masked crusader on a journey of freedom and justice in early 1800s California. Set to songs by the Gipsy Kings, including classics such as ‘Bamboleo’, ‘Baila Me’, and ‘Djobi Djoba’, the show is a non-stop burst of Hispanic energy mixed with a toe-tapping and familiar score.

The musical was first performed on the West End in 2008, earning several Lawrence Olivier Award nominations, including the Best New Musical award. Recently, it returned to the West End with a brief revival at the Charing Cross Theatre in the spring of this year.

Filled with spectacular swashbuckling, Spanish-inspired dancing, and comedy, the show’s music is by the Gipsy Kings and John Cameron; Stephen Clark and Helen Edmundson wrote the book, and the lyrics are by Stephen Clark.

Jamie Maguire, Director of Zorro: The Musical, says: “We started rehearsals for the show in autumn 2019. Sadly, like so many theatre groups, plans came to a swift halt following the COVID-19 restrictions. So, it’s so exciting and heart-warming to have a cast together again, one filled with original members from 2019 and new ones. This is, without doubt, a long-awaited performance for all the cast, crew, and creatives!”

Simon Pearce, Musical Director and Chair of The DN25 Company, continues: “It’s important to us that we bring a modern approach to the theatre; something that is accessible for all. It’s great that we can finally bring Zorro: The Musical to audiences who can enjoy the talented cast perform alongside our amazing live band.”
