Ipswich’s New Wolsey Theatre has responded to the challenges of the last year by innovating with its programming and investing in live-streaming technology. The latest innovation is a brand new performance space called ‘The Bowl’ located in front of the main theatre building. The new space will come alive from Friday 16th July at 5pm and continue with a packed music programme all weekend. This first night of the ‘Swich ON Summer programme of events (which continues over four consecutive weekends) will see hundreds of people able to enjoy live performance in an outdoor space with plenty of room for social distancing.
‘Swich ON Summer at the New Wolsey Theatre is a family friendly programme of (mostly free) performances taking place in and around the newly refurbished Theatre Square in Ipswich, as well as limited events in the auditorium.
On Friday 16th July at 7pm, the New Wolsey will announce their long-awaited Autumn Season, including the much-loved Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto and the latest musical from Peter Rowe (the follow up to the smash hit musical Our Blue Heaven), both of which will be live and live-streamed.
Sarah Holmes, CEO of The New Wolsey Theatre says: ‘We are extremely proud of what we’ve achieved in transforming the outdoor space in front of the New Wolsey Theatre. Thanks to our funding partners and supporters, we’ve been able to create a unique performance space into which we’ll be welcoming artists and audiences for the very first time this weekend. Our summer programme is accessible, family friendly, diverse and full of extraordinary artists: everything the New Wolsey Theatre stands for. We hope local people will come along to see what we’ve done with the place and have a great time seeing live performance again!’
They will be hosting these events in line with current Government Covid guidelines. Once restrictions are lifted on Monday 19th July, they will continue workplace testing for our artists and staff, and will continue to support and encourage mask wearing indoors, while recognising this will be a personal choice. They will also continue and enhanced Covid cleaning regime inside the auditorium and all public spaces, as well as a flexible ticket refund policy.
The first performance in a non-socially distanced auditorium will be ‘babies’ on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th August, and the Autumn Season will be sold in a non-socially distanced auditorium.
