It is never too late to dip your toe into the cultural world and pick up some performing skills. That is the message from Norwich Theatre Royal as a host of new activities and workshops are announced for the over-50s.
Regular workshops are already held which see members of visiting dance and ballet companies run music and movement workshops under the Limelighters banner.
Now these are being expanded to cover other areas of performance too. A regular Limelighters Drama Workshop will be held in the theatre’s Stage Two learning and participation centre with monthly Thursday sessions from 10am to 12noon.
Inspired by productions on the theatre stage, it will explore the skills and techniques of performers while also being fun. The key thing is that no experience is necessary and participants just need to have a curiosity and interest in the world of theatre. The June session will be inspired by the West End and touring hit The Play That Goes Wrong while July’s will focus on the National Theatre’s new interpretation of the classic novel Jane Eyre.
The first one has already been held inspired by the Norfolk and Norwich Festival programme with very positive feedback from participants already saying they learned a lot form it and thought the workshop leader was terrific, talented and fun.
Also just under way is Silver Stage which is a new course of weekly workshops to encourage people taking part to explore and develop performance skills. This will happen via exercises, improvisation and text as well as looking at different performance techniques. Where possible, there will also be the chance to engage with companies who are performing at the theatre.
Meanwhile the Limelighters dance workshops are set to continue. Northern Ballet and Rambert will be holding those on September 28 and October 19 respectively.
And Stage Two is also becoming the new home of Dance Fitness Norfolk. The group gives attendees the chance to have fun and enjoy moving their bodies in new ways to the accompaniment of music from around the world. This will run on Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm from June onwards.
Wendy Ellis, the theatre’s learning and participation manager, said:
“We welcome everyone over 50 to be a part of our Limelighters and Silver Stage projects. It does not matter whether you have danced or acted a bit before or are completely new to both. This is a great way of dipping your toe into the world of the creative arts.
The only thing we ask is that you are over 50. No previous experience is needed. Just come along and enjoy yourself.”
