Alexandra Burke Stars In The Bodyguard
Proving she still has the X-Factor, songstress Alexandra Burke has returned to play Rachel Marron in the new UK Tour of The Bodyguard The Musical, which arrives in Norwich from April 30 for two weeks.
Alexandra is a popular visitor to the Norwich stage, having trodden the boards in the city in both the first tour of The Bodyguard in May & June 2016, and in Sister Act in May 2017. She will perform the role of Rachel Marron at evening performances only.
The musical features the breath-taking music of the late Whitney Houston, who starred in the Oscar-nominated 1992 movie about a superstar singer who falls for her bodyguard, who was played by Kevin Costner.
Alexandra enjoyed a triumphant run in the stage show in both the West End and the sell-out 2015/2016 tour. She first rose to fame after winning the fifth series of The X Factor in 2008 and her debut number one single Hallelujah sold over one million copies in the UK, a first for a British female soloist.
On stage she has most recently appeared as Svetlana in Chess at the London Coliseum and as Roxie in Chicago at the West End’s Phoenix Theatre, while her other theatre credits include Deloris Van Cartier in the national 2016/17 UK and Ireland tour of the musical Sister Act. In 2017, she reached the 15th season final of Strictly Come Dancing.
A romantic thriller, The Bodyguard features a host of irresistible classics with music played by a live ten-piece orchestra. From Queen of the Night, So Emotional, One Moment in Time and Saving All My Love, to Run to You, I Have Nothing, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and one of the biggest hit songs of all time, I Will Always Love You, those smash-hit numbers just keep on coming.
The show, which took six years to develop and opened at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End in 2012, was nominated for four Olivier Awards and won Best New Musical at the Whatsonstage Awards.
In addition to its success in the West End and its first UK tour, it has also played in the Netherlands, Germany, South Korea, Canada, Italy, Australia, Madrid and France, as well as touring throughout the US.
Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, played by Benoît Maréchal (who starred in the same role in the French production of the show) is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge; what they don’t expect is to fall in love.
At certain performances Rachel Marron will be played by Carole Stennett, who impressed Norfolk audiences when performing in the role during the show’s previous visit to the county. Her many theatre credits include Rosa Parks in King at Hackney Empire, Dotty in Caroline and Nala in The Lion King in the West End and on tour. She has appeared as Rachel Marron many times in The Bodyguard in the West End, China and Toronto, as well as in the role of Nicki Marron in the West End.
Also in the cast is Micha Richardson as Nicki Marron (credits include the national tours of Legally Blonde, Fame and Mamma Mia!), Peter Landi (This House at the National Theatre, To Kill a Mockingbird at Manchester’s Royal Exchange) as Bill Devaney, Craig Berry (Mamma Mia!, Cats and the Producers) as Tony, Gary Turner (Carlos Diaz in Emmerdale and Nathan Blake in Hollyoaks, plus many theatre credits) as Sy Spector, Phil Atkinson (Pharaoh in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Little Shop of Horrors and Spring Awakening) as The Stalker, and Simon Cotton (A Clockwork Orange at the Park Theatre and The Dumb Waiter at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre) as Ray Court.
Judy Foster, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “We’re thrilled to be welcoming Alexandra Burke back to Norwich again for her third visit to us. The show boasts fabulous dance moves, big production numbers and an emotional journey at its heart – and who can fail to be moved by those wonderful Whitney Houston songs.”
Note: Alexandra Burke will perform the role of Rachel Marron at all evening performances only. Alexandra Burke is NOT scheduled to perform at any midweek or Saturday matinees including any revised matinee performances. The producers of The Bodyguard cannot guarantee the appearance of any particular artist, which is always subject to illness and holidays.
The Bodyguard is at the Norwich Theatre Royal on Tuesday 30 April-Saturday 11 May at 7.30pm, and Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. Please note there are no Sunday performances.
