DNA at The Garage

Peer pressure, fear and the bonds of friendship are explored in a chilling drama being presented by the Norwich Theatre Royal Youth Company.

DNA follows a group of teenage misfits known for their volatile and intimidating presence. When loner Amy decides she wants to join them, events begin to spiral out of control and a practical joke ends up having horrifying consequences.

Suddenly the young people realise they will have to create a web of lies in order to escape punishment, but is their bond of friendship and solidarity enough to help them maintain a united front and cope with their evil actions?

Find out what happens next in this emotional play which runs at The Garage on Norwich’s Chapelfield North from March 31 to April 2 at 8pm.

Penned by Dennis Kelly, who is best known for his West End hit Matilda, it examines a number of key themes including the need to belong, bullying, and taking responsibility for your actions.

It also gives members of the youth company the chance to get to grips with some strong characters and intricate plot twists in this challenging production.

Director Jo Reil said:

“Dennis Kelly is such a clever writer. He is able to pull humour out of the most horrific situations. This play is a real challenge for our students. I want them to really get their hands dirty and dig deep to understand where these characters come from and what makes them behave the way they do.

Rehearsals are intense and great fun all at the same time, but it is fantastic to work with such a great cast.”

The Norwich Theatre Royal Youth Company is drawn from students on the theatre’s own arts courses who get the opportunity to perform a wide range of plays and productions at both The Garage and the auditorium at the theatre.

It is part of the venue’s education programme which will all be based under one roof at the new Stage Two building from this autumn.
