Hobson’s Choice Revival at Norwich Theatre Royal

The 100th anniversary of the first performance of a comedy classic is being marked with a brand new production heading to Norwich Theatre Royal.

Hobson’s Choice is being revived with a star cast headed by respected stage and TV actor Martin Shaw in the lead role.

He will play the self-made man and shopkeeper Henry Hobson who is known for liking a drink, being careful with the pennies, and keeping a tight leash on his long-suffering daughters.
But things start to unravel for him when his eldest Maggie decides she wants to marry Hobson’s bootmaker Will Mossop. Stand by for a battle of wills as the forthright retailer locks horns with his own flesh and blood.

Expect wit, warmth and lots of laughter as the production takes to the stage with the hugely-experienced and much-respected Martin Shaw heading the cast. Last seen at Norwich Theatre Royal in the stunning production of 12 Angry Men, he also starred in A Man For All Seasons in the West End and was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in the Broadway production of A Man For All Seasons. Martin is also no stranger to the small screen thanks to roles in Inspector George Gently, Judge John Deed and The Professionals.

And he said the Norwich audience is in for a real treat when it arrives at the Theatre Royal from April 12th-16th.

“The play is a beautifully balanced slice of human life and it’s also an historical document now because it’s about the Industrial Revolution and how things were in the 1880s. It was written by a man who had been alive in the 1880s even though it wasn’t first performed until the following century.”

Starring opposite Martin will be Christopher Timothy, who is probably best known for his portrayal of James Herriot in the TV hit All Creatures Great and Small, as well as appearing in the BBC’s daytime drama Doctors as Dr Mac Maguire for six years. He is also no stranger to the stage appearing in the likes of West End hit Underneath The Arches, The Grapes of Wrath for Chichester Festival Theatre, and the touring hit Dial M For Murder which came to Norwich Theatre Royal in 2014.

John Bultitude, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said:

“This production promises to be something very special. A true stage classic with a strong cast headed by the always compelling and entertaining Martin Shaw will make this a must-see play thanks to its brilliant writing and snapshot of life at the end of the 19th Century.”
