Le Cage Aux Folles

Two top actors renowned for a host of stage hits and TV shows on both sides of the Atlantic are set to star in the first ever major nationwide tour of La Cage Aux Folles, which comes to Norwich Theatre Royal next year. John Partridge and Adrian Zmed will star in the multi-award-winning musical which will take to the city stage on January 17-21.

John, who is set to wow Norwich audiences next week in the sold-out stage smash-hit Chicago, will return in 2017 to play Albin who moonlights as the star drag act Zaza in the infamous nightclub La Cage Aux Folles. It is the latest part for John in a successful career which includes playing Christian Clarke in EastEnders and West End roles in Cats, A Chorus Line and Starlight Express.

He will star opposite Adrian Zmed, who plays his on-stage partner Georges who owns the club. Adrian may be best known in the UK for his role as Officer Vince Romano in the hit Eighties American cop-show TJ Hooker opposite William Shatner, but he is also an accomplished Broadway performer appearing there in Grease three times as well as Falsettos and Blood Brothers. It follows the couple who are living an idyllic existence in the South of France where everything seems to be fine.

But Georges’ son Jean-Michel announces his engagement to the daughter of a right-wing politician who is also determined to close down his club. When the parents of the couple meet pre-nuptials, Georges and Albin face the challenge of covering up their flamboyant lives to ensure their son can marry his true love.

The award-winning musical has been a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic. The original Broadway production was incredibly popular when it opened in 1983 receiving nine Tony Award nominations and winning six, including Best Musical and Best Score. Its success led to a hugely successful London Palladium run and productions worldwide.

And this debut major UK tour boasts a strong creative team. It is produced by respected theatrical impresario Bill Kenwright, directed by Martin Connor (The Lady Vanishes, Stepping Out, The Boyfriend), and features choreography by the Olivier Award-winning Bill Deamer. John Bultitude, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said:

“This lavishly funny story is sure to be a hot ticket in the city as the first ever major UK revival arrives. Its mix of glitz, razzamatazz, poignancy and pathos will help make it a must—see”

He added,

“It also features a show-stopping score which includes The Best of Times, Song on the Sand, and the iconic I Am What I Am.”
