Our Day Out

Bury Theatre Royal kicks off the Autumn Season this August with Our Day Out – The Musical, the iconic Willy Russell play. The week long run will be a culmination of the Summer School at Theatre Royal, allowing a young cast of 12 – 19 year olds to participate alongside professional cast and crew.

It’s a unique opportunity, which doesn’t come along often, to perform in a fantastic play – multi award winning Willy Russell went on to write, Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine and Blood Brothers – and it promises to be exhilarating entertainment (August 24 – September 2).

Directed by Karen Simpson, Director/CEO and David Whitney, who runs the youth Programme they are looking forward to transporting you to the school days of lollipop men, packed lunches and young love as this action packed rewrite of the hit 1977 TV show is brought to the Theatre Royal stage. Mrs Kay’s unruly Progress Class is unleashed from the classroom for a day to pile into a bus for a one-off school trip in this hilarious and heart-warming tale.

Karen Simpson commented,

‘Forty years on from its first production for BBC’s Play for Today, this version updated in 2009, still resonates with themes about the importance of education creating opportunities for young people. It’s exactly what is still required and we deliver on stage and off with this home grown production.’

Bury Theatre Royal are building a following and reputation for excellent home grown productions, Northanger Abbey recently completed a National tour to rave reviews.
