The Playhouse Reopens

Following a six week period of closure, the Playhouse in Norwich will reopen and welcome eager audiences back to a revamped auditorium. The refurbished space includes new carpeting, refitted and reupholstered seating, and a new colour scheme, but with the same capacity and excellent visibility.

Playhouse Director Caroline Richardson says: “It’s all so green, clean and beautiful! We can’t wait for all our patrons to come and enjoy the new look, the extra comfort, and the awesome autumn shows.”

The theatre will open its doors once again on Wednesday August 23rd, with a sold-out run of Norfolk favourites The Nimmo Twins. They’ll be performing their latest hilarious show The Country Cords.

The Playhouse opened originally as a regional repertory theatre before evolving into the much-loved venue it is today. Our intimate, vibrant auditorium plays host to award-winning shows from stand-up comics, astounding performances from the Edinburgh Fringe, marvellous music, fantastic family shows and much more.

For the first time since the Playhouse opened two decades ago, the venue has benefited from updated and renewed fixtures, with an extensive high-rise deep-clean. The Control Room has also been modernised with a new technical window, which will help enhance the quality of live music and interactive shows.

Playhouse staff estimates that the former seating had almost a million ‘bums on seats’ over those years; meaning each chair had been sat on almost 3500 times!

Local companies SJ Easter Upholstery and Reform Flooring have used their extensive talents and skills to create a refreshed look, which gives the space a much needed update whilst remaining true to the Playhouse spirit.

The refurbishment was funded by the Theatre Royal Trust as part of a programme of building investments across the Playhouse, Stage Two and the Theatre Royal itself. The Playhouse’s ticket pricing policies will remain as affordable and accessible as ever.
